A loose, laid-back, and unfussy garden for a young family in Carroll Gardens.
Shaped by three fragrant single-stem Sweetbay Magnolias, the space allows for a very flexible program and maximum plant diversity. The garden features three distinct habitats: the shrubby woodland edge, a lush and colorful “micro-meadow”, and a shaded woodland. A playful, willow wattle lined path takes you through the meadow in the sunniest spot of the garden, and helps to prop up those taller plants. Giant bluestone slabs provide a flexible play space and lead you to the rear lounge area paved in crushed bluestone. For a small space, there’s a lot of seasonal interest going on. Spring is awash in white fluffy flowers from late March to June. Summer is bursting with a cacophony of bees feeding on the Anise Hyssop, Coneflowers and dusky pink Joe Pye Weed. Fall is lit up with yellows and wheat colors, while evergreens give the garden its winter structure.
